Day 416: -7.5 lbs.

I’m back! I spent June bouncing between 306 and 301.5 and then back to 304. Ugh… Finally, today I finally broke out of that miserable cycle and dropped 5.5 lbs from last week to below 300 (298.5 to be exact). This officially marks 100 lbs. lost. Just another 150 or so to go! Easy peasy. Yeah, right…

So what happened in June? Beats me. I tried to stay well below my daily calorie allowance, despite a couple of deviations (dinner with friends including a helping of tiramisu). I’ve noticed a little more loosening of clothing in the last week and the fit in the chairs in the doctor’s office isn’t quite so snug so maybe it was another attempt by my body to do some adjusting. Whatever…

Just finished reading Fat Chance by Robert Lustig, M.D. This searing indictment of sugar in processed foods (specifically high-fructose corn syrup) was sort of a trip back to Biochem 101 (or maybe 201) but the premise seems was easy to follow. According to his thesis, I’m headed in the right direction. “Sugars,” including the relatively benign lactose, make up less than 10% of my daily calories. It’s actually more like 5%. I can’t remember when I’ve had a soda (high-octane or artificially sweetened). And, based on my labs in 2011, I don’t think I have insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. My doc has not mentioned it but I plan to ask a direct question at my next appointment. I’m not due for new labs for another couple of years but they ought to be improved over 2011. Lustig has his detractors but he makes the point that “a calorie is not necessarily a calorie.”
